Monstruosamente Solo - Facial Animation - 2019

This is the breakdown of some of Moncho's facial animation shots for the feature film "Monstruosamente Solo".

I rigged the face and led the team who animated this Moncho's face. There was a previous team who made a different face. The previous process required every frame to be painted manually in photoshop after making some of the animation in Toon Boom using pegs and frame by frame animation.

This is a showcase some of the shots I particpated directly.

About the process

I was hired when the director, Enrique Cruz, was planning to make the body with a 3d model that followed the motley's movement and was looking to continue with the face animation. I proposed a mixture of cut-out and frame by frame animation, that at least. would keep the line art and colour art in separate layers to help repainting him, because it was important to keep the "painted look".

When I was asked if the face could be painted directly in Toon Boom, I propounded a face template that could easily be painted with the desired textures using bitmaps masked with the colour art sublayers.

That way pieces as the teeth, the pupils, the tongue or the throat, could be painted only once intead of each frame. Better yet, if any of those would need an update, the drawings could be easily replaced.

The drawings for the mouth, the eyes, and the eye holes, would have a template and would only require a subtle touch after the animation was approved.
